It often involves only taking actions that are publicly visible in order to gain recognition by creating the impression that you’re putting in work as an ally. Real allyship occurs after it is no longer popular or trending to speak up; it is standing up for things knowing that the result will not benefit you. Performative allyship is based on the idea of self-gratification and does not look at your responsibility within a community; it is disingenuous.
