The very first English solo sonatas written specifically for the viola were published in 1770 by a little-known musician and bookseller by the name of William Flackton. Flackton’s express purpose was to encourage others to write for this unlikely solo instrument, as outlined in the preface to his Opus 2 publication of six solo sonatas of 1770:

The original article said "viola", not "viola da gamba" and this was changed by an anonymous 87.66.133.236 in September 2009. The ODNB article clearly states that "Flackton is perhaps best-known today for his compositions for the viola, notably his four sonatas ‘for tenor violin’ (1770)".
